Abstract Zaštićena područja predstavljaju temelj održivog razvoja u Europi i svijetu. Mura i
Očuvane prirodne obale Mure i Drave, zajedno sa svojim biljnim i životinjskim svijetom tvore prepoznatljiv nizinski krajobraz rubnog dijela panonske nizine. Mala razvučena naselja žive u skladu s okolnom prirodom, rijekom, šumom, livadama i oranicama. Taj život u suglasju prirodnog i stvorenog dobra najveća je vrijednost kojoj je Drava i Mura temeljna okosnica. Prostor parka obilježava i značajna georaznolikost vezana uz raznolikost sedimenata pretežito kvartarne starosti (riječni šljunci, pijesci, eolski sedimenti –les) geomorfološke, hidromorfološke procese (npr. oblikovanje sprudova, meandara), nalaze minerala (zlato) i paleontološke nalaze (fosilni sisavci), pojave ugljene nafte i drugo.
Abstract (english) Protected areas present for sustainable development along Europe and generally in the world. Mura and Drava belong to the short list of the last naturally meandring european rivers, characterized by high level of bio-diversity.
Gographically Mura-Drava area is proclaimed as a regional park. It is stressed as an area of high landscape diversity mostly formed by two main rivers. Preserved natural river banks of Mura and Drava, together with rich flora and fauna wild life, create a specific lowland landscape on the side zone of panonian lowland. Small extended villages which are developing in a relation with sourrounding nature values, rivers, forests, meadows and fertil agriculture land. It is a life in harmony with natural preserving activities balanced with sustainable progress. This kind of behaviour is charished the most and in the center of this life philosophy are rivers Mura and Drava.
The area of the park is characterized by significant geodiversity related to the diversity of sediments which mostly date to the Quaternary period (river gravels, sands, Aeolian sediments -loess), geomorphological and hydromorphological processes (eg. the creation of sandbanks or meanders), mineral (gold) and paleontological (fossils of mammals) findings, appearance of coal, oil and other phenomena. The protection of geodiversity of Mura-Drava Park represents basis for the preservation of biodiversity. These values have a significant potential for the development of geo-tourism as a specific element of the park offer.
The Croatian Government has confirmed official Declaration of regional park Mura, Drava on 10th February 2011. By this Declaration the complete area among rivers Mura and Drava according to Environment protection law is protected in category regional park. This was by far the very first regional park in Croatia. The regional park Mura-Drava stretches through five countries: Međimurje country, Varaždin country, Koprivnica-Križevci country,
Virovitica-Podravina country and Osijek-Baranja country. Total surface covers 87.680,52 ha. Management of regional park Mura-Drava is setup as coordination of public institutions for protected area management which are responsible to manage part of regional park within and situated in every country.
