Abstract

U posljednje vrijeme sve je veći interesa za prehrambenim proizvodima koji imaju pozitivan utjecaj na zdravlje ljudi. Uloga koju igra prehrana u prevenciji i liječenju mnogih bolesti postala je široko prihvaćena. U tom kontekstu biljne vrste iz roda Ocimum, posebno O. basilicum, zaslužuju posebnu pažnju jer proizvode sekundarne metabolite koji pak imaju široku lepezu pozitivnih svojstava na ljudsko zdravlje. Među najvažnijima su antioksidativna, antimikrobna i protuupalna svojstva. Postoji sve veći broj istraživanja koja naglašavaju primjenjivost tih biljaka kao izvora funkcionalne hrane. Cilj ovog diplomskog rada bio je dati pregled pozitivnih svojstava vrste O. basilicum koja mu daju čvrstu znanstvenu osnovu za vezu između hrane i zdravstvenih benefita.

Abstract (english)

In recent years, there is increased interest for a food products which can help maintain health; and the role that diet plays in the prevention and treatment of many illnesses has become widely accepted. In this context plants from genus Ocimum, especially O. basilicum require special attention. Those species produce secondary metabolites which encompass a wide array of functions and are employed by humans for their beneficial role. Among most important are antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. There is increasing number of studies that are highlighting the applicability of such plants as sources of functional foods. The aim of this diploma thesis was to present an overview of the O. basilicum which have a sound scientific basis for the relationship between foods and health benefits.
