Calculation of the dates with average air temeratures above 0°C, 5°C, 10°C and 15°C in two consecutive 30 year periods

Abstract

Agricultural production is vulnerable to climate change. Since all the scenarios predict global warming, it is possible to expect an earlier beginning of vegetation of agricultural crops in the continental part of Croatia. Under conditions of global warming, it is also noticed that sowing dates of summer crops are starting earlier than before. Because of that, there is a need for calculation of the beginning and the end of the growing season, and to know the duration of specific temperature threshold values and their change throughout two climatological data sets. Dates of beginning and the end of the period, as well as vegetation duration, were calculated for cardinal air temperatures 0°C, 5°C, 10°C and 15°C. Information about average monthly temperatures from each of the two climatic periods and for four meteorological stations was obtained from the DHMZ - Croatian Meteorological and
Hydrological Service. Calculations were done for Zagreb, Sisak, Slavonski Brod and Osijek, for
the reference period from 1961-1990 and the recent one, from 1991-2020. The locations and periods were then compared to determine differences among them, and assumptions for the future of climate change impact on crops in Croatia were made.
